I most surely relished the book. If you are to be studying Accounting and Finance as an auxiliary unit, this one is one of the best. It is written in an accessible style with not a little consideration for the needs of the student, yet quite a good amount of information is in there. Gowthorpe makes it easy for readers to fully grasp the fundamentals of finance and accounting concepts. It is especially useful to those with no or little formal training in finance, budgeting or investment.

Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity

It's interesting that the individual from Oregon stated, "After all the misery and torture Christians have dished out over the past 2000 years, I would expect at the very least that those same children be sent to gas chambers for their beliefs before anyone dare write a book about how Christians are persecuted." This is an incredibly asinine statement...go checkout Stalin and numerous other individuals who have killed millions and was an Atheist. Second, Limbaugh provides an interesting viewpoint on this whole debate. We live in a country where the ten commandments have been removed from a court house...but, they allow statues of Athena (a pagan god)...within our libraries. But, we can't have the ten commandments within a courthouse even though our legal system is based upon them. Also, go check out the trim on the Supreme Court...Moses holding the ten commandments. What are they going to do next...chisel it off?

This is the best FrontPage book you could put on your shelf. The author's comprehensive treatment of each subject is unequalled. The book works well as a reference, but it is also good as a tutorial for people that are new to the FrontPage environment. I have been using FrontPage 2000 for some time, and the predecessor of this book was my only go-to resource. Thankfully, FrontPage 2002: The Complete Reference improves upon that excellence with additional information on all of FrontPage 2002's new functionality. If you use FrontPage 2002 and you don't own this book, you have missed the boat.

I've done marketing via graphic design for over 30 years. Seldom... if ever, does a book come along that has such a WEALTH of practical, common sense advice, tips, insights, and resources. (Last one at this level in my humble opinion was David Ogilvy's book from 2 decades ago, and that was from an era BEFORE the internet! Carol Bentley's book is up-to-the-minute in topics and information!)
Practical, down-to-earth, friendly, FUN, easy to understand. I particularly enjoyed and relate to the part about how 'Charlie the Plumber' sees things.
We build plenty of marketing advice into the graphics we design for many clients worldwide... and from this point forward, this book will remain at my fingertips as MY marketing reference book.
If you have anything to do with marketing ANYTHING or ANYBODY, whether it be do-it-yourself, or through a professional, this book is a GOLD MINE of value. Don't hesitate!

Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits Review

Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I have not completely finished this book, I couldn't wait to write a review. Linda Gordon has done a masterful job of merging history, biography and art in a most enjoyable book. I can't put it down! Admittedly, I've always admired Dorothea Lange's photographs, but I had only an inkling as to how complicated her life was, and how entwined it was with San Francisco's Bohemian art world. Gordon's writing style is a joy and her meticulous research is obvious. Heretofore a reader has had a choice to either enjoy Lange's photographs, or tolerate what was written about her. Gordon's biography of Lange combines Lange's best photos (and many lesser know ones) with a strong, informative, thoroughly enjoyable and fast paced text. I highly recommend this book, especially in conjunction with Lange's photos and her own words in "Daring to Look: Lange's Photos and Field Notes." Thank you Ms. Gordon, a book long overdue!

Buried by the Times: The Holocaust and America's Most Important Newspaper Review

Buried by the Times: The Holocaust and America's Most Important Newspaper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was turned on to this book by a friend and when I next saw him, he asked me, refering to the author Laurel Leff's revelations, "did you know that?" I answered that I didn't know that the Times had basically hidden the news of the holocaust but, on the other hand, finding this out didn't surprise me. Sulzberger was an assimilated Jew, the descendent of Rabbi Steven Wise, a renowned Reform Rabbi whose theology was very assimilationist. Thus, despite his Jewishness, the Times rarely ran a major story about what was going on in the concentration camps and the stories that were written were not positioned in a prominent place. If they made the front page, it would not be postioned as the lead story.
Incredibly, the coverage of the holocaust did not mention "Jews" specifically. By reading the Times, you would not have known the extent of the genocide nor would you have known that Jews were the major target of the Nazi extermination efforts. It is important to note that there was never a "smoking gun" uncovered, i.e., a memo or written directive from Sulzberger ordering the staff of the Times to soft pedal the events in the concentration camps. What is beyond dispute is that the Sulzberger family was secular and did not view Jews as a people. What is further beyond dispute is that the coverage by the Times was scant. Thus, whether by directive or not, the Times failed miserably in its role as "journal of record," making a mockery of its motto "all the news that's fit to print. What is particularly reprehensible is that members of the Sulzberger family were being rescued while the details of the holocaust were being quashed.
The Times, could have been influential but, tragically, it failed to exercise it's influence. Roosevelt basically looked the other way and, in sadness, we can only wonder whether he could have withstood the pressure and continued to do little if the Times had fully covered the events. Back then the Times obviously had an agenda and today, it still does. There was daily coverage of the Abu Ghraib prison abuses with one breathless headline after another. That was the more recent Times' agenda, specifically, to discredit the efforts in Iraq, particularly in an election year when the events there might have been a campaign issue. Tragically, there were no such breathless headlines during the darkest hours of the holocaust.

Consuming Desires: Consumption, Culture, and the Pursuit of Happiness Review

Consuming Desires: Consumption, Culture, and the Pursuit of Happiness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book consists of a series 13 new essays by well-known writers on the topic of consumerism, together with an introduction by Roger Rosenblatt. About half the essays are sermons on the demons of consumerism and consumption. Mixed in with the diatribe are some interesting more informative pieces on such topics as competitive spending (Juliet Schor), youth consumerism (Alex Kotlowitz), ecology (Bill McKibben), publishing (Andre Schiffrin), and housework (Jane Smiley). Bharati Mukherjee contributes an Indian immigrant's view on consumerism, which hints at the lack of concern or comprehension about hyper-consumerism held by the population of one of the world's largest developing countries. If you are interested in consumerism (or preparing your own sermon on the topic), you may find some material of interest in this book.

Fast & Furious Book Promotion Review

Fast and Furious Book Promotion
Average Reviews:

The book is literate but barely useful to anyone with even a basic knowledge of the Internet. The author makes his living in the self-publishing field at ZDocs and his idea of promoting a book is to promote a self-published book with the barest of details. Instead of "Fast and Furious" the book would have been better titled "Make me money by using my company to self publish your book." In short, a waste of time and money.

Fast & Furious Book Promotion was written to introduce authors to the many ways - tactics- to promote their books online. But as Sun Tzu said, without strategy, tactics are simply the noise before defeat. Fast & Furious gives authors both strategy and tactics to successfully promote their books using blogs, articles, press releases, social networking and many other tools.

Media and Society in the Twentieth Century: A Historical Introduction Review

Media and Society in the Twentieth Century: A Historical Introduction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read this book for my study (Media and Journalism). I really enjoyed it. It's accessibly written for a change and gives a balanced view of how various media have developed in the 20th century. The authors take into account the various viewpoints -economic, social and other- without going to much into details. This makes to book a good introduction, giving its readers a clearcut overview of media developements in the past hundred years or so. Anyone interested in this topic will not regret buying this book.
The only flaw is its complete exclusion of develpements in non-western countries. I for one would liked have read some more on this topic.

Institutions and the Path to the Modern Economy: Lessons from Medieval Trade (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions) Review

Institutions and the Path to the Modern Economy: Lessons from Medieval Trade (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This original book draws into historical studies to illustrate the evolution of economics institutions. The application of economics, history and game theory is very creative and a definitely achievement of the book, in the tradition of North's "Understanding the Process of Economic Change" or other recent followers like Acemoglou's "Economic Origins of Dictatorship and democracy".
The book is divided in four main sections and 14 chapters. First, the author explains institutions as systems in equilibria, applying history and game theory. Then, he enlightens institutional dynamics as historical process (focusing on endogenous change or how history affects institutions and cultural beliefs) only to conclude with a method to apply in sociological and historical studies.
This is a seminal work and Greif's is able to clarify how market institutions work and evolve, how control and oversight institutions are created and how this questions relate to economic history and theory. Moreover, he illustrates them with real examples, like the evolution of medieval trade. It is a careful, readable and historical approach to economic development, applying economic and game theory to explain institutional patterns and change. Interesting!

Christian, Evangelical, & Democrat? Review

George Hunter is one of the lights of the Church in this country. He is a scholar, an evangelist, with a kind and gracious spirit. His teaching, speaking and writing have led us closer into life-changing relationships with Christ and more generously into sharing news of that faith with others.
Now he gives us guidance for living out our evangelistic faith in other areas of our lives, including our political perceptions and decisions. He is, as always, clear, engaging, compelling. This is a book to think through, to talk over with friends - read it! Talk about it! See what happens!

Shell, Greenpeace and Brent Spar Review

Shell, Greenpeace and Brent Spar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is not an account of what happened with the Brent Spar campaign, but a lugubrious attempt to analyse it within a vocabulary that will speak only to the author's fellow political scientists. There is no reporting in it whatsoever and even the ideas covered (or concluded?) are obscured by jargon and, well, rather poor writing.
The story itself is relevant for business analysts, activists, and interested observers. In 1996, after consultation with the British government, Royal Dutch Shell decided that it would dispose of a massive oil storage and loading platform (Brent Spar) at sea. While the method represented a new way of decommissioning such a platform, it appeared both scientifically and environmentally sound as well as cheap. What Shell managers did not count on was the campaign that GreenPeace developed against the company that was based on some dodgy conclusions: not only did the group call for a massive boycott - mostly in Germany! - but activists occupied the platform and were repelled (on TV naturally) by water cannons. The result was the worst kind of brand trashing that is imaginable for a major corporation, while GreenPeace gained huge publicity for its cause of environmentalism (and fundraising therefor). SHell may have had the science right, but the way it dealt with the crisis as GreenPeace engineered it was utterly disastrous. Eventually, Brent Spar was recycled on shore and SHell admitted activits to its panels for consultation, widening the voices heard as well as attempting to re-vamp its decisionmaking process (making it more centralized and hence less dependent on local technocrats).
Now that is pretty interesting stuff. Alas, this book is precisely the wrong place to learn about it!
Not recommended except for political scientists in the author's peer group.

The decision by multinational Shell not to dispose of the Brent Spar oil facility in the North Atlantic was taken after several occupations of the structure by Greenpeace, and as a result of large scale pro-Greenpeace protest in the UK, Germany and other countries. This case is often cited to show the power of single-issue groups to force big business to rethink the importance of environmental issues. However, research shows Shell changed its mind on the Brent Spar issue because of the corporate structure of the company and reluctance to bear the bad publicity. Grant Jordan considers the role of scientific advice in shaping governmental decisions on matters such as BSE, genetically modified foods, and global warming.

Entrepreneurship.Com Review

Entrepreneurship.Com
Average Reviews:

As I write this, the Nasdaq has fallen below 2200. This would be a horrible time to come out with one of those arrogant, jargon-filled, air-headed books celebrating Internet mania.
Fortunately, Tim Burns instead takes a back-to-basics approach to Internet entrepreneurship. He correctly identifies the genuine characteristics of the New Economy, e.g., "The new organizational wealth no longer centers around physical capital but around intellectual capital." (p. 22) But he advocates traditional business discipline rather than throwing the rulebook out the window.
In theory, a book about starting an Internet business might have to cover economic theory, business strategy, accounting, law, and finance, as well as describe the technical features and business implications of the Internet. In practice, an author has to pick and choose.
Burns puts emphasis on
--analysis of business opportunities (particularly in chapter 2, where he contrasts ten fallacies of Internet entrepreneurship with he calls the "reality-based Internet business model.")
--advice about creating a business plan
--principles of accounting (Burns' background is particularly strong here)
On the other hand, the discussions of Internet marketing tactics tend to be few and far between. Someone seeking advice on designing and promoting a web site or on email marketing would have to look elsewhere.
I think that this book best serves someone who never went to business school and who wants to fill in some knowledge gaps before launching a new enterprise. It's a lot less expensive than going back for your MBA.

Murder at the Sleepy Lagoon: Zoot Suits, Race, and Riot in Wartime L.A. Review

Murder at the Sleepy Lagoon: Zoot Suits, Race, and Riot in Wartime L.A.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is perhaps the most sophisticated study of 1940s street-level Los Angeles working class culture to appear thus far.
Historiographically, Pagon's book fits firmly in the anti-conspiratorial tradition of Richard Hofstadter, offering very subtle community-oriented analyses of the 1940s LA "pachuco" hysteria where others have tended to see manipulating conspirators at work (blaming, for instance, Hearst's rather irresponsible newspapers, in one common scenario of the left that is dismissed rather perfuctorily here).
Pagon, unlike some reviewers of his book, tends to avoid assuming too much about the teenagers who lay at the heart of the Sleepy Lagoon case, preferring to make very cautious statements about them and their motivations. The 38th Street youths emerge here not as figments of some Sociological treatise or as political or ideological pawns, but as energetic, if somewhat clueless, actors on an urban stage that was clearly often quite daunting to them. As such, Pagon does not excuse delinquent behavior - rather, he simply refrains from assuming that the activity of Mexican American teenagers was criminal merely because sensationalist press accounts claimed it was. As is perfectly clear from Pagon's account, several of the Sleepy Lagoon defendants were clearly budding petty criminals of various stripes, but most were ordinary city kids living on the mean streets of wartime LA. (And to doubt that Los Angeles was a violently segregated city during this era of restrictive covenants and police brutality is simply willfully naive.)
Although the book fails to provide the sort of details about the youths' motivations and actions that one might wish from a novel, one must recall that this book is in reality a work of rigorously documented history, and in fact represents the most difficult and painstaking sort of social history to actually construct. There simply is not a great deal of written documentation about these immigrant working class kids at more than a half-century's remove. What Pagon has managed to put together is very admirable, and his writing style, despite a bit too much repetition, is wonderfully clear and free of obfuscating jargon. What we have here is a fine work of historical scholarship that reveals quite a bit both about the individual characters involved and about the larger political purposes to which their stories were put.
Oh, and the prologue and epilogue represent absolutely wonderful examples of gripping and compelling historical detective writing, including a very reasonable and balanced new theory about just who actually committed the notorious Sleepy Lagoon murder!
