I used this a lot for my film studies, but Kapsis has written his Hitchcock analysis in such a way that it's easy for any reader to read it just for fun. My strong recommendations.

After reviewing the two other books of this type available, this one is by far the best. The chapter on CRM is what makes this one heads and tails above the others. If you are thinking of buying this book to read, don't think about it anymore. Buy it!

FrontPage 2002: The Complete Reference Review

FrontPage 2002: The Complete Reference

This is the best FrontPage book you could put on your shelf. The author's comprehensive treatment of each subject is unequalled. The book works well as a reference, but it is also good as a tutorial for people that are new to the FrontPage environment. I have been using FrontPage 2000 for some time, and the predecessor of this book was my only go-to resource. Thankfully, FrontPage 2002: The Complete Reference improves upon that excellence with additional information on all of FrontPage 2002's new functionality. If you use FrontPage 2002 and you don't own this book, you have missed the boat.

Reputation Management: The Key to Successful Public Relations and Corporate Communication Review

Reputation Management: The Key to Successful Public Relations and Corporate Communication

I would highly suggest this book to somebody interested in learning more about defending a corporate reputation. However, it might not be detailed enough for a small business practitioner, nor does it focus enough on the changes made by the Internet.

Reputation management is the most important theme in corporate and organizational communication today. Leading corporate communicators and educators John Doorley and Helio Fred Garcia argue that most CEOs don't actually pay much heed to reputation and this is to their peril. Heads of government and non-profit agencies don't do much better managing the reputation asset, as recent scandals demonstrate. Yet, when leaders get reputation right over the long term, they follow certain principles, like the ones described here for the first time by Joe Hardy, one of the world's most successful builders. This book is a how-to guide for professionals and students in public relations and corporate communication, as well as for CEOs and other leaders. It rests on the premise that reputation can be measured, monitored, and managed. Organized by corporate communication units (media relations, employee communication, government relations, and investor relations, for example), the book provides a field-tested guide to corporate reputation problems such as leaked memos, unfair treatment by the press, and negative rumors--and it is this rare book that focuses on practical solutions. Each chapter is fleshed out with real-world experience by the authors and their 25 contributors, including Lynn Appelbaum, The City College of New York; Gail Belmuth, International Flavors & Fragrances, Inc.; Kenneth Berkowitz, Healthcare Marketing and Communications Council; Roberta Bowman, Duke Energy Carolinas (formerly, Duke Power); Sandra Boyette, Wake Forest University; Andrea Coville and Ray Thomas, Brodeur; Lou Capozzi, Publicis; Steve Doyal, Hallmark; Anthony Ewing, Logos Consulting Group; Ed Ingle, Microsoft Corporation; James Lukaszewski, The Lukaszewski Group; Tim McMahon, McMahon Marketing; and Judy Voss, the Public Relations Society of America.

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition (Language, Culture, and Teaching Series) Review

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition (Language, Culture, and Teaching Series)

I found teaching from this a good corrective to bland and irrelevant fyc textbooks. It's built around a series of snowballing exercises that guide students from thinking about an issue that individually concerns them to becoming knowledgeable on that issue. In the process they pick up the basics of research, writing, and revision. It's progressive a la Dewey and Freire, with a heavy dose of logical reasoning, critical readings of sources, and media critique thrown in.
One caveat: its layout could use some work. It's hard on the eyes at times. But if you're a progressive fyc instructor, you'll like this. If you're looking for a more standard textbook, it might be too provocative and/or political.

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition employs a series of assignments that guide students to research and write about issues confronting their individual communities. Students start by identifying a community to which they belong and focusing on problems in it, and then analyze possible solutions, construct arguments for them, decide which are likely to succeed, and consider how to initiate action. This is a primary text for first-year composition courses, covering the basics of the writing process. The assignments are recursive. Short writing assignments in each chapter build up to longer papers. Each of the assignment questions is accompanied by a guide to thinking about and writing the assigned paper, followed by a short Focus On reading that provides a brief account of community activism, a media case study, or a notable success story. The longer papers are accompanied by in-class peer reading groups. Each successive peer reading attempts a higher level of conceptual critique. By working together throughout the semester, students create increasingly adept peer groups familiar with all stages of each other's research. The book is carefully structured, but there is plenty of "give" in it, allowing instructors to be flexible in adapting it to the needs of their students and courses. Community Writing: * is distinguished by pedagogy based on a collaborative, process-oriented, service learning approach that emphasizes media critique and field research on community issues chosen by individual students; * answers real student questions, such as: Where do I find articles on my topic? What if evidence contradicts my hypothesis? How do I know if a source is biased?; * is web-savvy--guides students into building their own Web sites, including a unique guide for critiquing the design and veracity of other people's websites; and * is media-savvy--topics include media monopolies, spin control, dumbing down, misleading statistics, the Freedom of Information Act, "crackpot" authors, political rhetoric, and fallacious argumentation.

Guerrilla P.R.: How You Can Wage an Effective Publicity Campaign...Without Going Broke Review

Guerrilla P.R.: How You Can Wage an Effective Publicity Campaign...Without Going Broke

I have had the good fortune of working with some of the top publicists in the country over the last 22 years, and wish that I could have read this book first. It would have made me much more effective in working with them, and also could have avoided a lot of their fees.
The advice is sound, based on my own experiences with a 37 city book tour in 1999. What it took me 37 cities to learn, you could glean from just reading this book. I envy you this opportunity.
Whatever your budget or appetite for public relations, the book will help you design and implement an effective program. It covers all of the basics, except for the Internet (which wasn't really a factor when this book was written). You will learn how to put out a press release, hold a press conference, do interviews, and create media events. Most of these things can be done relatively inexpensively, certainly at lower cost than with advertising.
I especially liked the high ethical standards that the book sets. It's easy to cut corners, but that is both wrong and eventually becomes ineffective.
May your 15 minutes of fame come soon as a result!
Seriously, public relations is a highly effective way to introduce potential customers to your products or services. It serves a good secondary purpose of helping you think through your message and who your audience is. This book does a good job of giving you questions to help you do both of these tasks. Follow this advice, and your business should be more successful within a year. Remember Mr. Levine's advice though, it's quality . . . not quantity . . . that counts.

iPhone and iPad Apps Marketing: Secrets to Selling Your iPhone and iPad Apps (Que Biz-Tech) Review

iPhone and iPad Apps Marketing: Secrets to Selling Your iPhone and iPad Apps (Que Biz-Tech)
Average Reviews:

Gone are the days that you could submit your apps to the App Store and without much effort at all thousands of eager users downloaded it. Unfortunately, as apps have become more popular, the competition has become far more fierce. Now, quality isn't enough. Even a low price won't guarantee downloads or a listing on the top apps lists. Now, like every other type of business venture, you have to market.
iphone & ipad Apps Marketing is not a programming guide and does not give any details about how to submit your app for review. There are other books for that sort of thing. Instead, iphone & ipad Apps Marketing focuses entirely on marketing, everything from making sure you pick the correct category for your app and targeting the right audience through creating descriptions and web pages that pop to the importance of reviews and promoting your work on other social networks.
Beyond the need to market, there were several topics discussed that are extremely important. One is about the pricing debate, especially how to balance making money and attracting customers. The second is the need to create quality and quantity. There are so many apps that aren't worth the price (even when they are free). Yet, in order to keep apps from dying a natural death, new material needs to be added fairly regularly. Again, trying to do both is pretty tricky.
