Democratization Without Representation: The Politics of Small Industry in Mexico Review

Kenneth Shadlen has produced a compelling, timely, thoughtful, innovative, and well-written book which is sure to secure a place as a "classic" in the literature on comparative politics. Far too little attention is paid to small industry, especially its role in political participation. While various classes of enterprise may indeed benefit from market liberalization, concurrent developments in the sphere of democratic governance in society can produce negative effects. This meticulously researched volume is must reading for students, professors, researchers, and policy analysts and an indispensable addition to university libraries. I eagerly await Shadlen's next opus.

Business Savvy for Today's New Entrepreneur Review

Business Savvy for Today's New Entrepreneur

I have read this book and found it to be one of the best books for small business want-to-be's and owners that I have seen. For the past 19 years I have worked as a small business and self-employment training consultant and have read and examined lots of small business books. This one, unlike many of them, is truly written for the small business person. The four sections of the book -- Choose your Business, Establish your Business, Build your Business Operation, and Make your Business Profitable -- can help you regardless of where you are in the development of your business. The forms and worksheets throughout the book and in the appendix are worth the price of the book alone. Pay particular attention to the wide side margins throughout the book where you'll find great additional information including tips, insights, red flags, and resources (hard copy and internet references, as well as software). Marilyn Burns and Cathy Bolton McCullough know what they are talking about. They have a wealth of small business experience and can become your personal consultants as their ideas lead you to success and greater profits in your own small business. Need I say more? I recommend this book highly!

Reformasi: The Struggle for Power in Post-Soeharto Indonesia Review

Reformasi: The Struggle for Power in Post-Soeharto Indonesia

I work with the government in Indonesia from time to time on financial matters. Very often, things that happen here are not understandable - parties start acting in ways that seem to run counter to our assessment of the situation. This book provided a level of detail and enough history so that, all of a sudden, seemingly arbitrary acts by gov't officals started making sense. I think that is the strongest compliment I can pay to this book.
It covers the politics, scandals and events from the tail end of Suharto to the election of Megawati. I think his assessment of the future is a little too gloomy, but his description of the past has been eagerly read by the Indonesian nationals I work with - most of whom hadn't ever gotten a full explanation of that time period.

This account of Indonesia's political and economic struggles details events from the final days of President Soeharto's rule through the first two years of Wahid's presidency. Drawing on interviews with political figures, government officials, prodemocracy activists, and paramilitary civilians, this book outlines the political crisis that pitted predemocracy reformers against corruptors, Islamists against nationalists, and the elite against the Indonesian people. This in-depth analysis of the world's fourth largest nation and the world's largest Muslim country recounts the collapse of the financial system, the downfall of Soeharto, and the relentless power struggles of an unscrupulous ruling class.

Business Without Borders: A Strategic Guide to Global Marketing Review

Business Without Borders: A Strategic Guide to Global Marketing

DePalma's book is much more than the sub-title "A Strategic Guide to Global Marketing" implies. It really addresses the strategic and tactical changes a company must go through internally in order to reap benefits from the world-wide marketplace. The first big "thread" that is important to me in the book is that globalizing a company is a process that needs to be worked through - you can't just mandate it into existence. You can't go into the process with the right answers ahead of time - they have to be discovered by going through the process. The second is that the effort requires corporate commitment: it requires a comprehensive and unified view, high-level corporate buy-in and support, and a person accountable for making it all happen. His concept of the Chief Globalization Officer (CGO) is precisely the answer most companies need. I highly recommend the book to globalization neophytes and experts alike.

I recently purchased this book. If you rely on this book for your ads and other marketing pieces, you won't do well. You need to study better direct response marketing books, such as Dan Kennedy's The Ultimate Sales Letter and Robert Bly's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Direct Marketing. This book has some good scripts for radio advertising but that'a about it. I thought about just throwing this book in the trash.

As the title of this review states, this book is a lesson in reality. Ms. Spence details her lifelong dream of opening up her own business, and the long, hard road, strewn with obstacles along the way. Spence tells how she overcame self-imposed and external issues on her way to entrepreneurship.
Ms. Spence tells her story in such a way that it makes the reader feel that she is in the same room with the reader, and that you are actually having a conversation with her. After reading her story, I really admire Ms. Spence for her "can-do" attitude, and her willingness to take risks. Her story of success is remarkable, indeed.
Read this book before you embark on any endevour, whether it is opening up your own business venture, as Spence has done, or investing in anything. Or just read the book for pleasure, as it's good reading, any way you look at it. Whatever you do, I highly recommend that you read Dreaming Out Loud.
