Campaign Strategies and Message Design: A Practitioner's Guide from Start to Finish Review

Campaign Strategies and Message Design: A Practitioner's Guide from Start to Finish

In fairness to the author, she is very clear in her preface who her target audience is: people working in the field of public relations or marketing who got there without formal training or education in the theory and practice of campaign management. The book serves that population very well. It provides a thorough and comprehensive, if academic, analysis of all the stages in creating and managing a campaign, and provides a solid foundation in the core building blocks of the discipline.
If, however, like me you are looking for a book that will provide hands-on, tactical advice on developing a communications campaign in a hurry and on a shoestring budget, you won't find much help here. I'm on my local school board, trying to develop a communications strategy to elicit community support for a large high school renovation project. Unfortunately, I found little in this book that I could translate into immediate strategy and tactics. I have a better understanding of the appropriate terminology used by campaign professionals, but I'm not any closer to putting a campaign - even an amateur one - of my own together.
Those looking for a deeper, theoretical grounding in campaign management should find this book worthwhile. Those looking for tactical, hands-on advice should keep looking.

How do professionals plan and execute a public communications campaign?Moffitt provides a detailed step-by-step examination of the conceptualizing, planning, and execution of a public relations, marketing/advertising, political, or social issue campaign. She provides basic theories, concepts, and issues to understand before one can even begin to conduct a campaign, and she examines the research tools and skills needed to investigate the organization, the industry, or the targeted audiences for a campaign. Basic strategies for setting a campaign's goals and objectives are analyzed as are message strategies to determine the correct wording and visualization factors. Lastly, Moffitt examines communication selection strategies for choosing the appropriate personal and media channels for delivering the messages.

Since the public campaign has emerged as a key model of organizational communication, professionals as well as students in advertising, marketing, and management will find the business end of the topic useful. Individuals involved with public relations, speech communication, broadcast and print media will benefit from the communication aspects.

A Citizen's Guide to Grassroots Campaigns Review

A Citizen's Guide to Grassroots Campaigns

Civics courses teach the virtues of the democratic system, but often leave out the part that most interests the individual: What is the role of individuals in a democratic society? What is the gritty reality beyond our image of Lion's Clubs, YMCA's, volunteerism or demonstrations? Which raises a question that wasn't even asked in my civics class: How important is individual activism in a democracy? I'd suggest A Citizen's Guide to Grass roots Campaigns over most civics classes. This "guide" is of the mentoring variety; while full of tips that inspire plans, the real beauty of the style is in the storytelling. There are no precise how-to rules when people take on local issues with local ingenuity. Even better, here are the tales of successful activists, folks who have found ways to confront forces of great change, even in the Garden State. Activism is at its hottest in New Jersey - highly industrial, highly political and highly expensive turf. But the stories chosen are common American struggles. A few folks in the inner city decide to revive their local park, and get graffiti artists to make a lasting children's mural, using the Tom Sawyer ethic. A woman starts a campaign to protect open space with a stream of volunteers through her kitchen office, and emerges as one of the state's conservation leaders. A group of six articulates concerns of the atomic arms buildup by sending a pamphlet to every home in town and a delegation to Moscow, which starts talks across both borders. And individuals explore the much scoffed at and equally popular self-help groups, by facing isolated personal pain, with others, and creating networks of healing.Barry makes a good case that the effects of being engaged are considerable at all scales. (This is a strong topic, as importance of local engagement has not fully been acknowledged and has been undercut in recent decades by the increasing flow and loss of immediacy of knowledge, i.e. virtual reality.) One chapter is devoted to individual empowerment. Other chapters consider every level of group effort - from one person, to a handful, to an army of handfuls. Mechanics, pitfalls and politics of citizen's campaigns are considered. One feels Margaret Mead can listen and hear her message expanded - small groups are powerful insofar as we choose, and this freedom is the bane and boon of American democracy.A Citizen's Guide's sunny side of American woes is a needed voice. A correlation emerges: campaigns taken on by determined local persons are more potent than agendas launched by distant interests. Another correlation: volunteerism isn't to be scoffed at as the dirty work of an entrepreneurial nation, rather it is the grit of a nation of persons able to work for something above personal gain. Thus, the skills it takes for quality grassroots work mirror the best business skills, each successful only insofar as it is done well. Engaged Americans appreciate the full responsibility of democracy, with its eternal vigilance, and the personal and communal enrichment spurred by the ideas and hard work of individuals. These lessons make A Citizen's Guide to Grassroots Campaigns a strong antidote to apathy.

Man, Oh Man, Writing M/M Fiction for Cash & Kinks Review

Man, Oh Man, Writing M/M Fiction for Cash and Kinks

Josh Lanyon's long awaited opus on the essentials of crafting a successful M/M novel hit the bookstores recently after a whirlwind of publicity and it was well worth the wait. This book is a step by step tutorial for both the novice and experienced writer on how to write the next great M/M novel. In his book Josh provides the reader with his own observations as well as astute and perceptive comments from others in the business such as publishers, writers, editors, reviewers and a host of insiders on how to create believable masculine characters while ensuring that the essential elements of a good novel are present in a story.
In Man, Oh Man! Writing M/M Fiction for Kinks and Cash Josh covers the basic fundamentals of good writing such as Hook, Characterizations, Dialogue and Conflict and he overlays this with the creative elements that are absolutely necessary for M/M romance in order for the book to grab the attention of editors, publishers and readers. Josh cautions that M/M romantic fiction should be from the male perspective and not stories about women masquerading as men and it must also be able to stand on its own without the sex.
I have been reviewing M/M romances for some time but didn't quite grasp the difference between M/M romance and gay fiction until I read Josh's succinct explanation in the book, and I'm sure that I am not the only one who was unaware of this distinction.
This is one of the most impressive how-to books that I have read in a while. What made this book different is Josh's easy, laid back, armchair style of imparting knowledge as a result of his years as a published author. The book provides practical examples and ideas that even a novice writer could easily grasp and implement. Josh uses humour in the book which makes communicating his knowledge easy on the reader. This book is rich in content based on Josh's experience, but he also gives us valuable information gleaned through a series of interviews conducted with industry insiders over the course of several months and offers the combined expertise of professionals in the business. Publishers give their take on what the current trends are in M/M fiction and offer a range of opinions based on reader surveys.
Josh takes us through the creative process starting with how and where to find fresh ideas and strong hooks, to creating believable masculine characters (since the majority of M/M authors today are women, I think they will find this very revealing) , to "selling" your carefully edited manuscript to a publisher and marketing the book after its release. Writers can take a page out of Josh's book, literally, and copy some of his strategies on the marketing of this book which were extremely effective.
Man, Oh Man! is geared to the rapidly expanding market of M/M romance and I would anticipate that the numbers of authors in this genre will grow exponentially as the market continues to increase. I attended Josh's recent on-line workshop for Cobblestone Press, which took place just prior to the release of the book and I was struck by the clarity of his presentation.
If I may, I would like to recommend a few chapters I found extremely relevant and informative - Looking for a Few Good Men - A strong character can carry a weak story; Cheat Sheets for Chicks -What makes a man and a woman different; Do the Math - Pacing - moving the story forward; What's it all about Alfie -Theme; MM! MM! Good and Rent Boys. I am not going to elaborate on all of the chapters because that would be a disservice to the reader and the book, plus there's only so much information that a reviewer should convey.
Each chapter is a little gem but there is not enough space to mention all of them. In order to get the full flavour and Josh's expert knowledge you need to read the book for yourself. Suffice it to say that I was inspired to write after reading Man, Oh Man! Writing M/M Fiction for Kinks and Cash, and if you've ever thought of writing for this genre then I think you`ll be motivated too. Authors and would-be writers of the genre should have a copy of this excellent reference source or your competition will blow you away. One bit of advice from Josh that resonated with me - write what you enjoy reading, make it fresh and write your passion.
