What You Need to Know about Business Review

What You Need to Know about Business
Average Reviews:

I listened to the audio version of this book and found it to be both enjoyable and informative.
It's sort of a crash course on business for those who haven't taken any university business courses. I mention "university" specifically because the approach taken in this book is more academic than "school of hard knocks." This has the advantage of making the book reasonably systematic, but the disadvantage of not providing the sorts of tips which can only come from successful veterans of the real business world.
Those who are new to business may find that this book provides useful orientation. Those who are experienced in business may find that this book usefully fills in a few gaps, though they probably won't discover any groundbreaking ideas, and they may even find the book a bit superficial - but that's the case with most business books. Still, again, I enjoyed this book and will likely listen to it again. And certainly it's a great value for the price.

Medical Journalism: Exposing Fact, Fiction, Fraud Review

Medical Journalism: Exposing Fact, Fiction, Fraud
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author, an M.D. with a background in journalism, provides an informative introduction to medical journalism.
Chapter 1 discusses the nature and scope of medical journalism. Chapter 2 identifies facets of journalism that can pose barriers to providing good reporting for the public. Chapter 3 examines the problems that journalists face when trying to identify and understand scientific facts in medicine, and offers pointers on how journalists can evaluate claims made about medical research and treatment. Chapter 4 notes the need for a journalist to understand the difference between qualitative medical claims with quantitative medical claims, briefly analyzes the forms of medical reasoning, and argues reporters need to be critical and skeptical when faced with claims of promising medical treatments. Chapter 5 discusses ten specific pitfalls that reporters need to avoid in medical reporting. Chapter 6 provides several reasons why reporters need to be critical when engaged in medical reporting. Chapter 7 contends reporters need to investigate certain topics, including the promotion of health and medical products, alternative medicine, and scientific fraud. Chapter 8 surveys online aspects of medical journalism. Although the information in Chapter 8 is somewhat dated as of the date of this review, it is not entirely obsolete and offers ideas that could provide useful leads for online research even today.
This book should be of primary interest to journalists, journalism students, public affairs professionals, and health care professionals who deal with the media. Other potential readers could be members of the general public interested in medical reporting, government officials or employees dealing with medical or health care issues, and persons interested in medical or scientific writing.

Positively False: Exposing the Myths Around HIV and AIDS Review

Positively False: Exposing the Myths Around HIV and AIDS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shenton's telling of a decade of investigation is a complementary part of the AIDS puzzle in main started and mostly filled in by scientists Robert Root-Bernstein and Peter Duesberg; - and Shenton journalistic comrades such as Jad Adams and Michael Fumento. Deductive, objective analysis of all the medical "reporting" of the AIDS statistics have always led to the realization that "you can't get there from here" in trying to understand what the establishment (NIH, CDC, WHO, etc.) has almost successfully rammed down the throats of Americans, and in doing so has killed tens to hundreds of thousands of patients decades before their time. The immense value of Shenton's work is that it is a lifesaving read for those who want to make their own decisions when confronted by a blood test that comes back "positive" for HIV antibodies as one can then refuse to be a fatal victim of the toxic therapy that is currently in vogue, and in fact one can then proceed to take the proper steps to fully recovered health as pointed to by this book and the other authors cited above.

Beyond E-Learning: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance Review

Beyond E-Learning: Approaches and Technologies to Enhance Organizational Knowledge, Learning, and Performance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Once again, Marc Rosenberg shows us the way to really transform our organizations into efficient, effective knowledge-centered enterprises. He warns that e-Learning, like training in general, is often done the wrong way, for the wrong reasons. He busts myths right and left (the section on "the myths of e-Learning" alone is worth the purchase price!), and steadfastly refuses to be swept along by fads, technologies -- or even traditions of training.
What Rosenberg does is to lay out a vision of the Smart Enterprise, in which the focus is on performers rather than learners. He argues persuasively that technologies such as e-Learning, classroom learning, knowledge management, communications and collaboration technologies are best viewed not as individual technologies (or fads), but rather as complementary parts of a balanced strategy for performance improvement in enterprises which effectively translate data to knowledge to information to performance. Detailed chapters then discuss each of the key components of this strategy for performance improvement, including practical advice on how to implement them and where the pitfalls are. Examples and issue sidebars featuring luminaries in the field and corporate success stories add weight to the argument.
This is not just another "business book of the month" full of quick-fix half-truths. It is a mature, broad and comprehensive view of what it really takes to make any knowledge-intensive organization get what it needs to reach its goals. Senior line organization managers will find it essential; training managers will find it liberating and exhilerating -- or threatening. It's required reading for everyone responsible for making their enterprises smart.

How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the Internet: 2007 Edition Review

How to Promote Your Music Successfully on the Internet: 2007 Edition
Average Reviews:

Not only is the best publication about how to sell your music on the internet that I have ever read, but the information contained within this literary gem will be of great value to anyone wishing to make music a carreer. I have purchased other books regarding the music industry and how to succeed but this by far outstips the others by a mile. You can buy this book with confidence, the author is who he says he is....a genuine musician...with the same hopes and aspirations as his readers and like his readers he likes to cut through the waffle. I can't rate the book or the author highly enough.

The Internet is an incredible promotional tool for musicians. You can get radio play, grow a fan base, create a distribution channel and sell CDs and music downloads all online. Imagine how much music you'd sell if *thousands* of people heard your music every day? Most musicians, however, have no idea where to begin when it comes to online promotion. Some get as far as putting up a web site, but stop there. That's where this book will help. David Nevue, an independent musician like yourself, uses the Internet to generate well over $60,000 a year in music-related sales. Today, David is doing the "music biz" full-time, having quit his "day job" in 2001 after making more money selling music online than working for a corporation! In this book, David will take you step by step through the same marketing strategies he's used since 1995 to promote his music successfully on the Internet. Now you too can build your own music career using the Internet -in your own time and on your own terms.

What it Takes to Make More Money than Your Parents (Vol. 1) Review

What it Takes to Make More Money than Your Parents (Vol. 1)
Average Reviews:

I want my kids to do better than I have, and faster than I have. What better way than encouraging them to read a book with interviews by young entrepreneurs? In 50 Interviews: Young Entrepreneurs - What it Takes to Make More Money than Your Parents (Vol. 1) these young people have determination and ideas that most older people would never have had the guts to follow. Let's face it, if you're over the age of 40 then you came from a time when life was a bit different than it is now. You went to school, got a job, worked your way up, then eventually retired.
Younger people have opportunities that we didn't. Sure, we can follow different paths now, but I think it's wonderful that this book was written so "kids" can see that it's possible to have a business, make money, and not have to slave away for 20-30 years at a job you merely tolerate or even hate.
Every parent should have their kids read this if they want them to be successful entrepreneurs.

Children are the future.Yeah. Right. We've heard that so many times that the expression has lost all meaning. But there is truth in it. Young people see the world with fresh eyes, looking past outmoded systems and prejudices. They embrace change, they dream up new ideas, and they do it all without batting an eyelash. Incidentally, these happen to be the qualities that set entrepreneurs apart. They also happen to be qualities that are routinely squashed in the public school system. Thinking small, being obedient, and coloring within the lines are considered virtues in the classroom and for anyone looking to get a job in a cubicle. Kids are missing out when no one tells them how much they could achieve by blazing their own trail. That's why we're so passionate about 'What it Takes to Make More Money than Your Parents'. The 25 amazing young people in this book don't just reveal the secrets to their success: they are living proof of the power that young people possess. All you need is an idea and an internet connection. The interviews speak for themselves. If you're holding this book, that means you've already taken the first step to realizing your full potential and making an impact in the world. Don't stop there. We can't wait to meet you at the top.In the mean time, we'd love your support in the form of your stories, suggestions, connections, or celebratory high-fives.

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition (Language, Culture, and Teaching Series) Review

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition (Language, Culture, and Teaching Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found teaching from this a good corrective to bland and irrelevant fyc textbooks. It's built around a series of snowballing exercises that guide students from thinking about an issue that individually concerns them to becoming knowledgeable on that issue. In the process they pick up the basics of research, writing, and revision. It's progressive a la Dewey and Freire, with a heavy dose of logical reasoning, critical readings of sources, and media critique thrown in.
One caveat: its layout could use some work. It's hard on the eyes at times. But if you're a progressive fyc instructor, you'll like this. If you're looking for a more standard textbook, it might be too provocative and/or political.

Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition employs a series of assignments that guide students to research and write about issues confronting their individual communities. Students start by identifying a community to which they belong and focusing on problems in it, and then analyze possible solutions, construct arguments for them, decide which are likely to succeed, and consider how to initiate action. This is a primary text for first-year composition courses, covering the basics of the writing process. The assignments are recursive. Short writing assignments in each chapter build up to longer papers. Each of the assignment questions is accompanied by a guide to thinking about and writing the assigned paper, followed by a short Focus On reading that provides a brief account of community activism, a media case study, or a notable success story. The longer papers are accompanied by in-class peer reading groups. Each successive peer reading attempts a higher level of conceptual critique. By working together throughout the semester, students create increasingly adept peer groups familiar with all stages of each other's research. The book is carefully structured, but there is plenty of "give" in it, allowing instructors to be flexible in adapting it to the needs of their students and courses. Community Writing: * is distinguished by pedagogy based on a collaborative, process-oriented, service learning approach that emphasizes media critique and field research on community issues chosen by individual students; * answers real student questions, such as: Where do I find articles on my topic? What if evidence contradicts my hypothesis? How do I know if a source is biased?; * is web-savvy--guides students into building their own Web sites, including a unique guide for critiquing the design and veracity of other people's websites; and * is media-savvy--topics include media monopolies, spin control, dumbing down, misleading statistics, the Freedom of Information Act, "crackpot" authors, political rhetoric, and fallacious argumentation.

Campaign Strategies and Message Design: A Practitioner's Guide from Start to Finish Review

Campaign Strategies and Message Design: A Practitioner's Guide from Start to Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In fairness to the author, she is very clear in her preface who her target audience is: people working in the field of public relations or marketing who got there without formal training or education in the theory and practice of campaign management. The book serves that population very well. It provides a thorough and comprehensive, if academic, analysis of all the stages in creating and managing a campaign, and provides a solid foundation in the core building blocks of the discipline.
If, however, like me you are looking for a book that will provide hands-on, tactical advice on developing a communications campaign in a hurry and on a shoestring budget, you won't find much help here. I'm on my local school board, trying to develop a communications strategy to elicit community support for a large high school renovation project. Unfortunately, I found little in this book that I could translate into immediate strategy and tactics. I have a better understanding of the appropriate terminology used by campaign professionals, but I'm not any closer to putting a campaign - even an amateur one - of my own together.
Those looking for a deeper, theoretical grounding in campaign management should find this book worthwhile. Those looking for tactical, hands-on advice should keep looking.

How do professionals plan and execute a public communications campaign?Moffitt provides a detailed step-by-step examination of the conceptualizing, planning, and execution of a public relations, marketing/advertising, political, or social issue campaign. She provides basic theories, concepts, and issues to understand before one can even begin to conduct a campaign, and she examines the research tools and skills needed to investigate the organization, the industry, or the targeted audiences for a campaign. Basic strategies for setting a campaign's goals and objectives are analyzed as are message strategies to determine the correct wording and visualization factors. Lastly, Moffitt examines communication selection strategies for choosing the appropriate personal and media channels for delivering the messages.

Since the public campaign has emerged as a key model of organizational communication, professionals as well as students in advertising, marketing, and management will find the business end of the topic useful. Individuals involved with public relations, speech communication, broadcast and print media will benefit from the communication aspects.

Word Spy: The Word Lover's Guide to Modern Culture Review

Word Spy: The Word Lover's Guide to Modern Culture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After nine years of hosting one of the most popular websites on neologisms - words which have entered our vocabularies, but not yet our dictionaries -- Paul McFedries has written a tourist's guide to modern society using new words as signposts.
What better indication is there of what is important to us than the new words we create? We live in a world that is more stressed ("road rage", "postal"), older ("boomeritis", "silver ceiling"), and self-consciously materialistic ("metrosexual", "McMansion"). We are also a generation which has incorporated such words of war and destruction as "weapons-grade" into our everyday vocabulary. No wonder some of us are "downsizing", moving "off-the-grid" and reading "comfort books".
Paul McFedries is a self-proclaimed "neologophiliac". What he really loves, like H L Mencken, is: "the biology of language, as opposed to its paleantology". Best of all, he is able to express that "irrational exhuberance" in language that is funny and light.
There are regular additions to McFedries' collection of new words on http://www.wordspy.com/ .

International Economic Indicators and Central Banks (Wiley Finance) Review

International Economic Indicators and Central Banks (Wiley Finance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you need to understand how central banks function in the major economic markets around the world (European Union, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Canada, and China), this book is for you. You might invest in overseas markets, your company might be working with overseas partners or considering expansion to new markets, or you might simply be interested in better understanding the economic events you read in the news. For us, Anne Dolganos Picker has done a wonderful service with this book.
In the first part of the book (the first seven chapters), she gives us an overview of central banks in the world today and then a specific chapter on each of the six central banks being discussed. We learn a bit about their history, their independence (or not), their transparency (or not), what they have been charged with doing (price stability or currency valuation or whatever - they are not all the same), if their objectives have been changed over time, and their track record over time in achieving those objectives.
The second part of the book looks at the economic indicators used by those various central banks in making their decisions and if those indicators are available to the public, by subscription, or not at all (China being the most closed). The United Kingdom is the most open while others are open or closed to mixed degrees. It is important to understand what these banks are tasked with doing, what their favored indicators are in order to try and get a feel for what actions they are likely to take.
Another reason to learn about these indicators is that even measures with the same names such as GDP or CPI are defined differently in different countries. For example, the unemployment rate in Germany is reported two ways, by the way the Germans measure it and by the European standard. This is because the country and the EU define employment differently. Base years for these measurements are not synchronized around the world, either. This can make comparability of changes in these measures difficult to compare without careful adjustment.
I found the book fascinating and was pleased with how clearly the author wrote the book. This subject could have easily melted down into impossible to understand jargon, but she kept it surprisingly lively. Appendix A is a terrific list of the key indicators by country and the issuing agency for each indicator (and if they are available on the web). Appendix B compares the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA) used by the United States versus the System of National Accounts (SNA) used in most other countries. Appendix C discusses the various Industrial Classification Systems (which have a big impact on the usability of certain manufacturing and labor statistics and for comparison across nations). And there is a very useful glossary and index.
This is a terrific book and I am glad to have it on my shelf and expect to refer to it with regularity.

Expert Podcasting Practices For Dummies Review

Expert Podcasting Practices For Dummies
Average Reviews:

Many different topics are covered; this book gives a good flavor to what's needed to launch a podcast. The value of this book is increased by the audio, video, and information files provided on the DVD. Topics like "adding a blog to your podcast" included here have been skipped by most podcasting books.
Another big plus: the authors aren't afraid to make specific equipment recommendations, and they also recommend lower-end gear for beginners. On the topic of USB Microphones, the authors mentioned the Rode Podcaster microphone. They didn't mention the huge advantage of this mic: it has a headphone jack built-in to the microphone so you can hear yourself without any latency. As the authors note, this is a problem for all other USB microphones. I've picked up one of these wonderful microphones for my own podcasting.
With the bonus material on the DVD, you get a sense of the fun of podcasting.

His online material on getting started in podcasting puts a lot of useful material in one place, just what the doctor ordered to do the most important thing: diving in and turning out a quality product from the word go.
His forté is promotion, to make yourself known, for developing niche credibility, product recognition, etc. and doing so using internet technology and information based services/products. As such, the name of the game is proper presentation of that most critical information: who you are and what you have to offer.
