I appreciate the instruction, examples, and experiences in the book. It is well worth the information as an overview to help set up your first business. Half of the book was the stories of tiny struggling young wannabes that are finally having some success. The other half was useful to direct and warn against pitfalls. I welcome a second, advanced book that would fill in the actual procedures, budgets, infrastructure, and daily activities from a seasoned stronger feature film producing company. This book is a good start and I recommend it.

The Branch Davidians of Waco: The History and Beliefs of an Apocalyptic Sect Review

The Branch Davidians of Waco: The History and Beliefs of an Apocalyptic Sect
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are looking for one complete study of the events leading up to the deadly fire of April 19, 1993, then this is the book you want to read. It reviews the founding of the Davidian sect, the breaking down into the various branches still with us today, and carefully tracks the development of Branch Davidian theology from its roots in the Seventh Day Adventist sect into the last days and hours of the siege itself. Despite the lack of written material available to researchers, there are dozens of audio tapes recorded during Bible studies led by David Koresh as well as interviews with many people who heard him speak, including survivors of the fire. The amount of material the writer worked through in creating this book is daunting, to say the least, and lends a great deal of credence to his conclusion.
By the time you read the last page, the writer will have convinced you that the fire at Mt. Carmel was all but inevitable. The only real question was when it would occur, not if it would occur. Due in no small part to inexcusable mistakes by the B.A.T.F.E (A.T.F. at the time of the fire) and the failure of the F.B.I. Hostage Rescue Team to bring in the appropriate expertise, the fire occurred much sooner than it needed to and probably took far more lives than it would have in different circumstances. However, hindsight is always 20/20 while foresight is blind, which is something this book makes abundantly apparent. In this case, as in many such cases, asking "what if" is not only foolish, it leads into useless speculation. A far better question is "why", and that is the question this book answers in crystal clarity.

Don't Call Me Nuts : Coping with the Stigma of Mental Illness Review

Don't Call Me Nuts : Coping with the Stigma of Mental Illness
Average Reviews:

When this book arrived in the mail I hoped I wouldn't be disappointed or bored. I needn't have worried, it is fantastic. It reads easily, yet takes on some tough subjects such as: whether or not to disclose mental illness, addressing stigma and suggestions for handling society and bringing about greater understanding. The examples are colorful and the suggestions are useful. What a superb job Patrick Corrigan and Robert Lundin have done. I hope this team puts forth some more books for us.

Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment? Review

Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved this book, even though I am not a vegetarian. This is because Dr. Maurer's writing style is excellent; she knows how to convey what she's writing about without making it sound like a lecture. It reads like a real book, supplying many facts, insights and ideas that propel you from one page to the next. It's not preachy at all, she just tells you what vegetarianism is about, and what life is like for vegetarians (The answer to that would be pretty much no different from a meat-eater). There were a lot of interesting little tidbits in this book, like how many Seventh-Day Adventists are vegetarians, and how many Yoga practitioners are also vegetarians. I also liked reading about the efforts of individuals and groups to convince food vendors (Restaurants, school lunchrooms, etc.) to offer meatless choices as part of their menus. So, if you're at all interested in the subject matter, this would be the best place to start learning more.

Vegetarianism seems to be increasing in popularity and acceptance in the United States and Canada, yet, quite surprisingly, the percentage of the population practicing vegetarian diets has not changed dramatically over the past 30 years. People typically view vegetarianism as a personal habit or food choice, even though organizations in North America have been promoting vegetarianism as a movement since the 1850s. This book examines the organizational aspects of vegetarianism and tries to explain why the predominant movement strategies have not successfully attracted more people to adopt a vegetarian identity. "Vegetarianism: Movement or Moment?" is the first book to consider the movement on a broad scale from a social science perspective. While this book takes into account the unique history of North American vegetarianism and the various reasons why people adopt vegetarian diets, it focuses on how movement leaders' beliefs regarding the dynamics of social change contributes to the selection of particular strategies for attracting people to vegetarianism. In the context of this focus, this book highlights several controversies about vegetarianism that have emerged in nutrition and popular media over the past 30 years. Author note: Donna Maurer is a long-time vegetarian and freelance academic editor who also teaches online for the University of Maryland University College, where she is Adjunct Associate Professor of Sociology. She has co-edited three books on food and body weight issues (with Jeffery Sobal), including "Eating Agendas: Food and Nutrition as Social Problems". She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for the Study of Food and Society.
