Starting & Building a Nonprofit: A Practical Guide Review

Starting and Building a Nonprofit: A Practical Guide

I was interested in learning everything that I needed to know about setting up a nonprofit organization, step-by-step. I wanted to know the right questions to ask an attorney and do as much of the groundwork as possible to help save costs.
Attorney Peri Pakroo has done a superb job. This book was EXCELLENTLY written, easy to understand, thorough, and presented in a concise format. I found the price to be quite reasonable considering that it ALSO contained a CD that had various checklists.
So much of forming a nonprofit organization is just following directions (but you NEED to FOLLOW the directions perfectly) and doing steps A-Z. (There are a LOT of steps!) "Starting and Building a Nonprofit...." made following these directions clear and straightforward to get you through each step.
At the same time, because they were featured together - I also ordered "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About Your Nonprofit Organization" by Ms. Cellaneous based on a lot of excellent reviews. In my opinion, it didn't begin to cover the process of all the steps needed to form an organization.
Thankfully, I ordered THIS book as well...because frankly, it was the only book I found I needed.

Lonely Planet Travel Writing (How to) Review

Lonely Planet Travel Writing (How to)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This is one of the best guides to any kind of writing that I've run across -- and by far the best to the difficult craft of travel writing. I've used it in my classes this summer and have been recommending it to every writer I know.
The chief author, Don George, is himself a traveler, travel writer, travel editor and teacher of travel writing, and all his experience comes into play in this compact, well-organized book.
The basics are all there, but the book goes far beyond them, adding a short history of travel literature; an outline of the ``quintessential qualities'' a travel writer needs (not least flexibility, frugality and passion); detailed advice from successful writers and major editors; even a list of travel-literature classics.
This book is destined to be a classic of its own -- one I wish I could have turned to when I was setting out in the field 25 years ago. And, like Lonely Planet's guidebooks, it's compact enough to slip into a backpack and take on the road, in case the muse hits -- as it too often does -- on a distant beach or mountaintop.
-- Catherine Watson, former travel editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, is the author of ``Roads Less Traveled -- Dispatches from the Ends of the Earth'' (Syren, 2005).

Keeping Watch: Monitoring Technology and Innovation in UN Peace Operations Review

Keeping Watch: Monitoring Technology and Innovation in UN Peace Operations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Professor Walter Dorn is the de facto dean of the small number of scholars who study the specific topic of peacekeeping intelligence, or intelligence support to United Nations (UN) operations. Since his pioneering early studies of UN successes in the Congo in the 1960's to his more recent articles on the introduction of the Joint Military Analysis Centre (JMAC) in Haiti, he is both the closest academic observer, and the most well-written in this area.
I read this book with great interest. It is the first comprehensive look at technologies that are directly applicable to the fulfillment of UN mandates, the design and security of multinational forces, the effective management of tactical campaigns, and of course being technical, it is the first and last word on surveillance technologies vital to peacekeeping and peace enforcement across vast regions.
Pending the "Inside the Book" feature being available for this just published book, here is the table of contents from my own copy.
1 Introduction
2 The Evolution of Peacekeeping
3 Monitoring: The Constant Need
4 Survey of Technologies
5 Aerial Surveillance: Eye in the Sky
6 Traditional Peacekeeping: Cases
7 Modern Multidimensional Peacekeeping: Cases
8 Current UN Standards: Starting from Near Zero
9 Challenges and Problems
10 Recommendations
11 Conclusions
I recently attending a conference on the history and future of UN Air Power, and in both my own presentations and those of others, "Peace from Above" was a recurring theme. The importance of assuring that UN elements have the best possible human and technical surveillance technologies cannot be understated--for modest investments--including Unmanned Aerial Vehecles--the UN can save lives, money, and time--on the latter point, Colin Gray, in Modern Strategy observes that time is the one strategic variable that can neither be purchased nor replaced.
A word on pricing: as those who follow my reviews know, I will occasionally single out extraordinary books that are so grotesquely priced as to dishonor the entire publishing world. This book is perfectly priced, close to my standard of page count with one decimal. I salute the UN Press for bringing this book into the world. It should become a standard volume, not only for UN training classes, but for all war colleges as well as for commercial security training and operations.

Knowledge is power. In the hands of UN peacekeepers, it can be a power for peace. Lacking knowledge, peacekeepers often find themselves powerless in the field, unable to protect themselves and others. The United Nations owes it to the world and to its peacekeepers to utilize all available tools to make its monitoring and surveillance work more effective. Keeping Watch explains how technologies can increase the range, effectiveness, and accuracy of UN observation. Satellites, aircraft, and ground sensors enable wider coverage of many areas, over longer periods of time, while decreasing intrusiveness. These devices can transmit and record imagery for wider dissemination and further analysis, and as evidence in human rights cases and tribunals. They also allow observation at a safe distance from dangerous areas, especially in advance of UN patrols, humanitarian convoys, or robust forces. While sensor technologies have been increasing exponentially in performance while decreasing rapidly in price, however, the United Nations continues to use technologies from the 1980s.This book identifies potential problems and pitfalls with modern technologies and the challenges to incorporate them into the UN system. The few cases of technologies effectively harnessed in the field are examined, and creative recommendations are offered to overcome the institutional inertia and widespread misunderstandings about how technology can complement human initiative in the quest for peace in war-torn lands. "Walter Dorn is one of the most thoughtful and knowledgeable analysts of peacekeeping and security policy, and this book makes an important contribution to a field that needs far more public discussion." —The Hon. Bob Rae, MP for Toronto Centre and Liberal Foreign Affairs critic

iPhone and iPad Apps Marketing: Secrets to Selling Your iPhone and iPad Apps (Que Biz-Tech)

Gone are the days that you could submit your apps to the App Store and without much effort at all thousands of eager users downloaded it. Unfortunately, as apps have become more popular, the competition has become far more fierce. Now, quality isn't enough. Even a low price won't guarantee downloads or a listing on the top apps lists. Now, like every other type of business venture, you have to market.
iphone & ipad Apps Marketing is not a programming guide and does not give any details about how to submit your app for review. There are other books for that sort of thing. Instead, iphone & ipad Apps Marketing focuses entirely on marketing, everything from making sure you pick the correct category for your app and targeting the right audience through creating descriptions and web pages that pop to the importance of reviews and promoting your work on other social networks.
Beyond the need to market, there were several topics discussed that are extremely important. One is about the pricing debate, especially how to balance making money and attracting customers. The second is the need to create quality and quantity. There are so many apps that aren't worth the price (even when they are free). Yet, in order to keep apps from dying a natural death, new material needs to be added fairly regularly. Again, trying to do both is pretty tricky.

For this review I consulted my spouse, Dr. Lyn Schenbeck, who has many years' experience in the music industry. She writes:
Instead of being written as a single unit, From Demo to Delivery is a book of essays from some of the great producers and engineers of today. Each chapter takes you one step further in the process of taking a song from its demonstration version to the completed format, ready to deliver to a distributor. Not only is the technology explained in brief but accurate scenarios, but a discussion of some of the business aspects of publicity, promotion, distribution, and retail take the reader into the delivery process. In addition, the book contains a brief biography of each of the contributors which explains why Mr. Hepworth-Sawyer chose these particular people. This is a good, useful book for anyone who wants to understand how song goes from creation to the marketplace.

Cracked Media: The Sound of Malfunction Review

Cracked Media: The Sound of Malfunction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A fascinating account of practices of cracked media, giving an astounding number of examples that document this movement and trace its genealogy back in time through various avant-garde artistic practices. Kelly convincingly links a lot of disparate practices under this term; my only question would be whether in fact there might be a major omission in the form of musique concrete which would seem to fit in the category. The book is perhaps more of interest for its accounts of artistic /musical practice rather than its forays into the theoretical realm when it tries to think through some of the issues arising from them, as well as about the nature of music vs sound art, sound vs noise, but this is not the major focus of the book anyway really so little matter. Anyone who has ever thought that the Madonna CD playing in the supermarket sounded much better when it started skipping, or who loves the sound of the run out groove at the end of a 33rpm or the satisfying kthunk hsss hsss as the stylus drops on to a platter of vinyl has to read this.

If you have recently started your own small business and are wondering how you can ramp up on your knowledge of sales & marketing, this book gives you a fantastic start. Most entrepreneurs are experts at something that has a need in the market (and hence they start a company to fill that need profitably), but are typically beginners at everything else that a successful startup business demands. After struggling for more than two years trying to make my own startup business successful, I hired a business coach to help me fill the void in knowledge with regards to sales & marketing. She recommended this book right off the bat.
The book starts by explaining the 6 different marketing strategies that are available to most businesses and their effectiveness. These six strategies are - 1. Direct contact and follow up, 2. Networking and referral building, 3. Public Speaking, 4. Writing and Publicity, 5. Promotional Events, and 6. Advertising in that order. The next two chapters focus on the marketing/sales cycle and setting your own goals. The book then launches into outlining 'The System' - their 28 day marketing program that is geared towards increasing your bottom line. The last part of the book focuses on strategies for specific problems you may be running into with implementing the system. The whole book is just 10 chapters in about 200 pages. Very efficient and effective in getting results.
There are a lot of worksheets throughout the book that the reader can use. This book is most effective when you use it with the help of a business coach. There is a lot more to becoming successful in sales & marketing than just understanding the basic theory. Even though the book does a great job of arming you with detailed knowledge and incredible confidence, you still need someone with experience to guide you through this process to get the best results.
This 28 day program will be slightly different for everyone who follows it because of the unique situation you may be in. But if repeated several times, you will see better and better results. The best part about the book is that it demystefies sales & marketing and gives you a systematic approach that you can follow. It is as simple as that. And, you will know quickly if the system works for you (it's only a 28 day commitment). When I read the book, I was a bit taken aback thinking 'Is this it? Is it that simple?'. I spent a little time trying to compare the book to the recognized text books in the field and finally decided to just put it to the test myself. I tried a few things that the book recommended and saw instant results!
Sure, there is more to sales & marketing and you will discover it over time with experience (as it applies to your specific business). But no other book gives you this much information in such a short time. Good luck with your business and definitely seek the assistance of a business coach!

Prime Time Activism: Media Strategies for Grassroots Organizing

I can't recommend this book highly enough. I do training for grassroots and social change organizations and groups and have found that this covers more of the essential, nitty-gritty practices and problems of getting mainstream media attention than any other book I've read--by far. Charlotte Ryan does a service to all organizations hoping to bring their message to a broad audience and see the world changed for the better. Understand how the media works, how it can work for you (and against you), how to frame your message, the pitfalls of seeking mainstream media attention. This is not "how to write a press release," because in the real world of public relations, that's almost the least important skill. She cuts to the essential opportunities and challenges of media coverage to advance social change. Even for anyone who simply wants to understand how the media covers alternative viewpoints, this is an essential read. Thank you Ms. Ryan!

Contracts Review

E. Allan Farnsworth was a reporter for the Restatement (Second) of Contracts, and until the American Law Institute publishes a Concise Restatement of Contracts, this book is about as close as we're going to get.

This volume is a one-volume condensation, for student use, of Farnsworth's three-volume treatise on contract law, and it's worth every penny it costs. It may, however, be a bit daunting for a One-L looking for a text to supplement the casebook, so you might consider using Calamari as your main hornbook.

But my personal recommendation is that you buy both if you can; where Calamari is brief, Farnsworth elaborates a great deal and provides plenty of dense, helpful detail. I myself used Calamari for basic principles and Farnsworth for further discussion.

Farnsworth is also the author of _Changing Your Mind: The Law of Regretted Decisions_. Check that one out too.

Nomonhan: Japan Against Russia, 1939

Being in the French military since 1976, I have studied quite extensively the Soviets. It took me twenty years to find a book on Khalkhin Gol (the Soviet name for Nomonhan). Coox's book, though written almost exclusively from Japanese sources, showed great insight into the way the Soviet commanders were thinking at the time. Since the 90s, a number of reports have emerged, which tend to support Coox's analyses. One very good book on the subject is recent, and not a doorstopper ! It is written by a French scholar on Soviet matters, called Jacques Sappir, and the title is (in French) "La Mandchourie oubliée" (Forgotten Manchuria). Sappir elaborates on the evolution of Soviet military doctrine, and traces back the tremendous impact of BOTH Manchurian campaigns (1939 and 1945). So his work is not focused exclusively on that precise story, but it gives a much wider perspective. Coox is cited as a source. All this to say that Sappir, judging from a totally different perspective, shows how Coox was right, even despite a dearth of Soviet contemporary sources. Proof that, even without material evidence, sound analysis can supplement much missing information.
I therefore recommend reading BOTH books, probably Sappir first (for the wider picture, and because for most people who have some acquaintance with Soviet stuff, the point of departure will be more familiar). Then expand into Coox's work, to give the tactical story "as it happened", complete with great case studies of leadership, morale and propaganda, combined arms and air power, logistics, planning...

Man, Oh Man, Writing M/M Fiction for Cash & Kinks Review

Man, Oh Man, Writing M/M Fiction for Cash and Kinks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Josh Lanyon's long awaited opus on the essentials of crafting a successful M/M novel hit the bookstores recently after a whirlwind of publicity and it was well worth the wait. This book is a step by step tutorial for both the novice and experienced writer on how to write the next great M/M novel. In his book Josh provides the reader with his own observations as well as astute and perceptive comments from others in the business such as publishers, writers, editors, reviewers and a host of insiders on how to create believable masculine characters while ensuring that the essential elements of a good novel are present in a story.
In Man, Oh Man! Writing M/M Fiction for Kinks and Cash Josh covers the basic fundamentals of good writing such as Hook, Characterizations, Dialogue and Conflict and he overlays this with the creative elements that are absolutely necessary for M/M romance in order for the book to grab the attention of editors, publishers and readers. Josh cautions that M/M romantic fiction should be from the male perspective and not stories about women masquerading as men and it must also be able to stand on its own without the sex.
I have been reviewing M/M romances for some time but didn't quite grasp the difference between M/M romance and gay fiction until I read Josh's succinct explanation in the book, and I'm sure that I am not the only one who was unaware of this distinction.
This is one of the most impressive how-to books that I have read in a while. What made this book different is Josh's easy, laid back, armchair style of imparting knowledge as a result of his years as a published author. The book provides practical examples and ideas that even a novice writer could easily grasp and implement. Josh uses humour in the book which makes communicating his knowledge easy on the reader. This book is rich in content based on Josh's experience, but he also gives us valuable information gleaned through a series of interviews conducted with industry insiders over the course of several months and offers the combined expertise of professionals in the business. Publishers give their take on what the current trends are in M/M fiction and offer a range of opinions based on reader surveys.
Josh takes us through the creative process starting with how and where to find fresh ideas and strong hooks, to creating believable masculine characters (since the majority of M/M authors today are women, I think they will find this very revealing) , to "selling" your carefully edited manuscript to a publisher and marketing the book after its release. Writers can take a page out of Josh's book, literally, and copy some of his strategies on the marketing of this book which were extremely effective.
Man, Oh Man! is geared to the rapidly expanding market of M/M romance and I would anticipate that the numbers of authors in this genre will grow exponentially as the market continues to increase. I attended Josh's recent on-line workshop for Cobblestone Press, which took place just prior to the release of the book and I was struck by the clarity of his presentation.
If I may, I would like to recommend a few chapters I found extremely relevant and informative - Looking for a Few Good Men - A strong character can carry a weak story; Cheat Sheets for Chicks -What makes a man and a woman different; Do the Math - Pacing - moving the story forward; What's it all about Alfie -Theme; MM! MM! Good and Rent Boys. I am not going to elaborate on all of the chapters because that would be a disservice to the reader and the book, plus there's only so much information that a reviewer should convey.
Each chapter is a little gem but there is not enough space to mention all of them. In order to get the full flavour and Josh's expert knowledge you need to read the book for yourself. Suffice it to say that I was inspired to write after reading Man, Oh Man! Writing M/M Fiction for Kinks and Cash, and if you've ever thought of writing for this genre then I think you`ll be motivated too. Authors and would-be writers of the genre should have a copy of this excellent reference source or your competition will blow you away. One bit of advice from Josh that resonated with me - write what you enjoy reading, make it fresh and write your passion.

I was looking for a book that could provide details on the inner workings of the animation business. This book did not disappoint. In fact it is much more than I expected. The book details such thing as financing, budgeting, distribution, marketing, pitching your product, operational strategies, and key management fundamentals specific to this industry. It is obvious that the author has been entrenched in this industry and knows it well. Page after page is filled with factual data about production budgets, film revenues (not just box office, all the channels), operational costs, and extremely informative statistical snapshots. This edition was printed in 2004 and the industry has certainly changed, but a vast majority of the information in this book is still relevant today.

I'm a small 2 person business based in Australia looking to release a new product, but this book is written for and ideal only for multimillion dollar, international companies with gigantic million dollar launch budgets, and with access to hundreds of staff to gather a "Launch Team".
Small businesses need more advice than multimillion dollar company's and given the expertise of the authors I believe they missed their boat in their own target audience for this product.
While this book does have the occasional tip or two, they are very few and far between; most of the copy refers back to a study they conducted, making for a book full of facts and statistics, not hands on, step by step advice.
If you can't find anything else to assist you, then for sure, take a read of this, but otherwise, keep looking. I found it hard to motivate myself to continue and finish it.
Wish I could be more positive, but I'm going to stick with my Guerrilla Marketing series of books, inspiring, motivational and practical!

How to Write Eye-Catching Headlines for Your Press Releases and Articles

I feel like a person should know that this e-book has only 5 1/2 pages of information--and those pages have a very narrow collection of words running down them. It seemed that, if the book was typed like a letter, everything would fit on 1 or 2 pages. Another issue is that 3 pages in this e-book are simply a listing/order form for other publications and cd's one can order from this company. Be warned--what made this situation so frustrating is that a consumer can't return an e-book (I looked at the return policies at Amazon). So basically a person is stuck if they order this and aren't satisfied with such little information for the whopping $9.00 price tag--and we even have to print the book out. The author used her expertise in writing a great headline to sucker me in and buy this dissapointing e-book. I would be in the market for other books on the subject by this author/company, but now I won't even consider purchasing anything else from the publisher--101PublicRelations.com
