After reading this book, I had the overwhelming urge to take this book, stand atop the desk at our sales meeting and scream "You see, this THIS is what I've been trying to teach you for the last three years!"
In short, I loved the book.
'Roadrunner Marketing: Strategic Secrets You Wish You Knew' re-emphasized everything I believe to be fundamental to sound marketing practices. It is a very easy read, and even though I have nearly 14 years of marketing experience behind me, I found new nuggets of information that I can apply immediately. I seriously want to buy copies for our entire sales department as I feel they can benefit enormously from the advice and strategies within.
It doesn't matter if you are taking your first bold steps into the marketing world, or if you're a seasoned pro (like me) looking to find a competitive edge, this book is a good guide to have by your side. It helped me recharge my creative batteries, got me excited again about the advertising opportunities (even in our down economy) and actually gave me the courage to set my sail and seek out new challenges.

Bottom line: this book fills a much needed gap in reviewing the state of military historiography and its themes. This alone makes it worthwhile for military historians to read this book.
If you're familiar with Black's work, you're already familiar with many of the themes in the book. However, the book captures all of them and then some. He basically addresses six "problems" he sees in "the state of military history as generally consumed by the public at large:" too much of a Eurocentric (and American) focus; a technological bias in explaining military capability; a focus on leading powers and dominant military systems; a separation of land and sea conflict; a focus on traditional state vs. state conflict; and a lack of focus on "political tasking" in the setting of force structure, doctrines and goals, and in the judging of military success. His argument isn't necessarily that these aspects of military history are wrong, only that they ignore other aspects that lead to a fuller understanding of the world -- it skews the perspective.
Black also reviews how military historians have treated warfare since the beginning of the early modern period with chapters on 1500-1815, 1775-1918, and 1914 to today. Although I've read his opinions on many of these themes, there's enough new in the book to make it interesting, and he pulls it together in a more thoughtful manner. In fact, Black refers to it as a "thought book" with a global perspective.
The book is not an easy read and it's not because of differences between American and British writing styles. Black is always a difficult read, as anyone who has read his other books can attest. As an American who has lived in the UK for seven years, and who earned his Masters in War Studies at King's College London, I can tell you there are plenty of other British military historians who are easier to read (Such as Michael Howard, Brian Holden-Reid, Max Hastings, and Colin S. Grey.) Having said that, he may be tough to read, but he's worth it...especially with this book.

Marilyn Mitchell has written an insider's report on doing social science research in the private sector. The intended audience is academic social scientists, especially anthropologists. She orients the reader to where the private sector uses research, what methods are common and useful, effective entrepreneurial behaviors, and to managing communications and contracts. The book is a useful guide to private-sector work for academics. People contemplating working outside academia - both students and faculty - should read it.
Review
This text by anthropologist Marilyn Mitchell is a useful addition to the Sage Qualitative Research Methods series. It is organized into seven chapters, includes five appendices, and provides references and resources. Social scientists thinking about a move from the academic into the private sector are the intended readers. The subject is not methods but where to apply them: "This is not a book about mastering research methods. It is a book about how to get paid for mastery you already have or can easily acquire." (p. 2)
Her attention in much of the text is on entrepreneurial contract work as a freelance operator or as an employee actively selling research services. Readers enticed by private-sector opportunities will learn much about valued behaviors just by attending to the numerous remarks about salesmanship.
Private-Sector Research Settings. This chapter summarizes organizations that employ social scientists. Settings are divided into supplier side and client side organizations. Ad agencies, market research firms, consulting outfits and people doing freelance work are some of the external research suppliers she describes. Internal research departments and human resources departments are major client side research centers. Throughout the chapter, the emphasis is on what functions are performed and where academically trained and experienced researchers fit. Anthropologists should take note of this: "Freelancing is especially appropriate and lucrative for social scientists with exotic methodological capabilities." (p. 11).
Renaming Your Skills. In this chapter "...the emphasis is on information that will enable you to make the translation to commercial research." (p. 14); the chapter is divided into sections that discuss qualitative and quantitative methods. Varieties of interviews are the primary qualitative methods. These include depth interviews (one-on-ones, dyads, triads); focus groups, which she characterizes as the "...mainstay of private sector qualitative research..." (p. 16); and ethnographic interviews. Interesting because it fits with what anthropologists do, she remarks that "In consumer market research, good clients for ethnographic projects are those who design, make or sell products that involve complex purchase decision processes, high substitutability, and lots of symbolic content." (pp. 19-20). But, ethnographic interviewing is seldom used and researchers will need to introduce and sell the method (and see Appendix D). Innovative use of observational techniques also finds a place in the commercial researcher's tool box. Sales modeling and predicting require knowledge of statistical methods many anthropologists lack but may want to acquire upon moving into the private sector; she notes (p. 24) that modeling research is intellectually demanding and often highly lucrative.
Business Activities That Require Research. This chapter is on behaviors businesses research. Consumer, public & political, and organizational behaviors are treated separately. Consumer behavior is the most important of the lot; she presents material on markets and marketing and on sales modeling and predicting here. Anthropological knowledge allowing a firm to target particular segments is valuable: "...do not hesitate to talk about the cultural aspects of targeting. This is one of the most powerful and salable elements of the ethnographic perspective." (p. 28).
Marketing Yourself to the Private Sector.This chapter is the heart of the volume; it is a primer on effective entrepreneurial behavior in the commercial research sector. The chapter is directed to individuals seeking contract work so the emphasis is on self-promotion, making effective presentations to win contracts and on materials that remind clients of one's services. This is essential reading for people who are thinking of going into business as research suppliers; Mitchell makes it clear that effective self-promotion and salesmanship are required. She covers making yourself known to clients (creating and maintaining visibility) and the content and context of effective presentations. Her advice on how to manipulate the symbols of business practice through presentation and follow-up is apt; academics used to lecturing classes of students will learn much here about different expectations for behavior.
Project Management. Topics in this chapter include requests for proposals (rfp), bidding on a contract, presenting and reviewing bids, and the product delivered to clients. She includes observations on writing in the private sector and the proprietary nature of data in this sector. The business model contrasts with the academic model of sharing and open collegiality with respect to research results. Business Management. This chapter is on the role of communications in a contractual environment, conflict and its management, privacy and property in commercial transactions and time and money management. The sections on managing conflicts and time and money management highlight differences between academic and private sector relationships.
The book ends with a conclusion, five appendices, references and a section on additional resources. Two of the appendices (A: Example of a Request for Proposal and C: Where to learn about an Industry) are particularly useful. Appendix D: Response to an RFP Using Ethnographic Interviewing and Semiotic Analysis is not, in fact, a response to an RIP but is instead a mini-discussion of various qualitative research methods and their merits; this appendix is mistitled.
Recommendations
Social scientists (both faculty and students) interested in the private sector should read this book. Faculty advisors will read it to help students plan for non-academic careers; skills valued in the private sector, and the places that value them, are presented here. Students will read it because it discusses realistic alternatives to academic and public sector work, and because the discussion is loaded with information that can be used to plan career goals and select classes and research topics.
Comments
Mitchell points out very clearly along the way where academic practices differ from business practices, and where they are similar, so that adaptation can be made. Strict regard for confidentiality - even the legal necessity of this - is required in the private sector. The tips and tactics she presents for working in the private sector are pointers to impo rtant symbols and behaviors in a culture of work different from the academic world. She invites the reader to imagine being comfortable in this setting, and to reflect on whether choosing to earn a living in business is a workable personal choice. Important behaviors expected include self-promotion, the ability to turn projects around quickly, and considerable skills in cooperating, cajoling and flattering. Intellectual rigor and research skills are the underpinning but do not, of themselves, bring work in the door.
The book has signs of having been edited in a hurry. The Chapter Two title (Renaming Your Skills) has scant relation to the subject; one appendix is also misnamed. The conversational tone adopted in some sections does not enhance the material, but currently is the vogue in academic writing.
This is a valuable little book but, when it is prepared, the second edition needs a heavier editoial hand.

This book is a general overview of web design.
The book begins with examples of web architecture (linear, hub, etc.) and then begins to expand on all issues related to web design( Text, Graphics,etc.). In my opinion it does not do this in the proper order. You learn about Graphics and Browser Auto-Detection before you learn about text. This is not that bad though. Basically this book lists improvements and the do's and don'ts of making a site. This book does not teach HTML! You will find very little on tags. The book frequently references it's Companion Book (Complete Reference: HTML).
This book also stops teaching about 75% through it. It then begins to explain what the future of web design will be and starts it's huge appendix section. In my opinion, alot of the different appendices should have been in a different book. What's the use of listing the hexidecimal color codes in a book that mentions very little or nothing about color usage in web design.
I also would have liked a section in the book on page layout. The book uses one layout throughout the entire book.
Java and CSS code is spread throughout the book, but no mention of how to put it into your site. Another thing I did not like about the book was, on about 25% of the improvements to web sites it listed, it gave you no code to perform the improvement. Examples: There are many useful forms in the book, but no code. It fully explains the importance of having a local search engine on your site. No code. There are many others.
Also, the book is too big for it's binder. After the first full day of usage(turning pages and laying the book flat so I could reference or type in some code) pages began to separate from the binding. I'm gonna have to go to Kinko's and get it rebound.
To me, this book is meant for someone who knows HTML code, but does not know the methodology of creating a user friendly site.
Do not, get this book if this is your first time building a site!
Do get this book if you are seeking to improve upon your current web design style!

This is an important book, which is not to say it's a great book. When intellectual historians look back to that strange time when cultural studies was trendy in the late 80s and early 90s, this might be the one book they cite as evidence that cultural studies raised very important questions but gave us intellectually obtuse answers. The questions that Grossberg poses are definitely significant, and more so today--the rise of the right-wing as "popular conservatism," the condition of postmodernity and its simulated depthlessness, the death of rock music, the waning of affect and ironic cynicism among young people,, etc. But his prose is notorious for its obfuscations, its fetishism of French theory (especially the dadaist Marxism of Henri Lefebvre and the incomprehensible Deleuze and Guattari), and the fact that Grossberg built his career writing about music and youth culture but never quoted a lyric or talked at length about a particular band. It's still a worthwhile read for lefty intellectuals and if anything I think too many have dismissed Grossberg's work on the basis of its cult stud/pomo pretensions. But beware the lines of flight and deterretorialization.

As most contemporary authors, as well as actors, designers, and other ambitious and savvy professionals and amateurs in other fields have learned, one has to have an effective Internet presence, in most cases a website, to hope to compete in their field. Saieh provides a to-the-point, experienced handbook for how to get rated near the top of web search engines such as Google or Yahoo. This is all important considering that keyword searches with these search engines often turn up tens of thousands of responses.
Some of what is found in Saieh's handbook is in other books on the broad, multifaceted subject of websites. But Saieh goes beyond the cursory material found in most of these, so that her book is more useful. She not only says what is necessary to be listed at or near the top of search engine listings, but also explains in nontechnical language how the search engines work so one understands the reason for this.
Saieh assumes the reader is already convinced of the incomparable importance of having a website to establish one's identity in the field of one's choice, further one's career, sell one's product or services, or communicate one's message. Going beyond this, she also assumes nearly every reader will already have a website. So she does not spend time on trying to persuade one of the importance of a website, nor on how to get one up and running. She focuses sharply on getting one's website to stand out with the search engines once one understands the importance of a site and puts the effort into creating one.
Leading up to her main topic of search-engine listings, she does go over the elements of a good--i. e., effective, productive--website and research one should do to ensure such a site. In the style of the handbook the work is intended to be, each chapter ends with a bulleted listing of "Action Steps to Take" highlighting the to-do and how-to parts of the respective chapter.
Getting listed highly in search engine results is not the only aim in trying to make a website work: Keeping a high listing is an ongoing aim; and the author covers this as well.
Saieh is a website consultant with a specialization in search-engine optimization research and methodology with a decade of experience. Stellar Image is the name of her business. Many artists, writers, marketers, etc., will find her compact, informative manual invaluable in being effective in the highly-competitive and ever-growing world of the Internet.

Writing for Conferences: A Handbook for Graduate Students and Faculty, is a "must have" text for any student or instructor who wishes to prepare and present a paper for conferences. The chapters include topics such as finding the "right" conference, preparing for presentation, and networking at the conference. Authors Leo Mallette and Clare Berger clearly fill a niche since there are few books which relate to this subject available. I would recommend this book highly to both graduate students and new faculty as an excellent reference guide to further publishing, career opportunities, and enhancing networking skills. Peter Knight is a scholar of American Studies now at the University of Manchester (UK), with an excellent reputation and a demonstrated empirical in the largely American phenomenom that calls into question what Knight would call "the narratives of authorities and the authority of narratives."
This excellent book is a demonstration of why American Studies scholars from abroad often can brilliantly inform our understanding of ourselves.
He generally uses methods from the cultural studies field not, as the previous reviewer would have it, to bash conspiracy theorists themselves or their notions of reality.
His goal is to demonstrate how American conspiracy culture of the last 50 years tries to make sense of ideas about causality, agency and responsibility in the global era, one in which we suffer from too much information and an overload of "meaning."
He certainly lit up the attic for me.
